Just look at this thing. How could I resist? It’s even shaped like the crappy old Apple II computer that most people probably played it on in school in the early 80’s.
The emulation seems pretty accurate so far. The edges and coloring have been smoothed out a bit, but otherwise it looks and plays just just the original. The controls work surprisingly well given the limited number of buttons and while the screen is pretty tiny, it does look quite nice for what it is.
I was surprised to find that it actually has a working save system too. Was there even an option to save in the original game? I can’t quite remember, but I feel like there wasn’t. Those crappy old Apples often didn’t even have hard drives, so I don’t remember there being much saving going on in any game.
Anyway, this is a pretty cool new way to experience the grandfather of survival games. It’s probably not going to be blowing anyone’s mind these days, but it is a great little piece of video game history that’s wrapped up in a nice nostalgic package.
These things are apparently a Target exclusive, but you can also grab them on Amazon or eBay and probably some other places.
